Rules and Regulations

This page documents membership policy, radio operation requirements, and standard operating procedures for W5YJ. Treat this as the source of truth for member conduct and station operations.

Membership Rules

Eligibility

Membership is open to all undergraduate and graduate students at Oklahoma State University. Voting membership is limited to currently enrolled students.

Non-Discrimination

Membership is non-discriminatory based on race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or any other protected characteristic.

Active Status

To maintain active membership, members must attend at least two meetings per semester. Members who do not meet this requirement may petition to excuse absences.

Radio Operation Regulations

FCC Compliance

All radio operations must comply with FCC regulations, including proper licensing and frequency usage.

Equipment Access

Full members with a valid FCC Amateur Radio license may operate club equipment. Access to equipment is subject to club rules and procedures.

Conduct

Members must follow FCC guidelines and club policies, including the proper use and care of equipment.

Setup and Shutdown

Startup

Ensure all power supplies are connected, turn on equipment in the correct sequence (starting with the power supply, followed by the transceiver), and verify the antenna connections are secure.

Shutdown

Power down equipment in reverse order, disconnect power supplies, and store all cables and accessories in their designated places.

Operating Guidelines

Logging Contacts

Maintain an accurate log of all contacts, including date, time, frequency, and call signs.

Antenna Adjustments

Check and adjust the antenna for the desired frequency range, following club guidelines.

Interference Management

Monitor for any interference issues, and follow prescribed steps to minimize or eliminate interference, including adjusting frequencies and checking equipment connections.

Maintenance

Routine Checks

Conduct regular inspections of all equipment, including cables, connectors, and antennas, to identify any wear or damage.

Cleaning Procedures

Clean radio equipment and the operating area regularly to prevent dust buildup and ensure longevity.

Minor Repairs

Document and carry out minor repairs as needed, following the manufacturer’s instructions or club-approved methods.
