About W5YJ

Oklahoma State's Radio Community

More than just a hobby, amateur radio is engineering, communication, and community service all in one.

W5YJ is the student amateur radio club at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, Oklahoma. We've been a hub for radio enthusiasts, engineers, and experimenters on campus for decades, welcoming everyone from complete beginners to seasoned operators.

Our club station is equipped with HF transceivers capable of reaching across the country and around the world. Members have the opportunity to operate during national contests, connect with international stations, and experiment with digital modes, satellite communications, and more.

We love chasing DX, making contacts across the globe on HF, and are always looking to grow our presence on campus and in the Stillwater community.

What We Do

Something for Every Operator

From first-time listeners to seasoned operators, W5YJ has something for every level of interest.

01
HF Operating

We operate on the high-frequency bands and make contacts across the country and around the world. Club members have access to our IC-7300 and other HF rigs during operations.

02
Long Distance Operations

We regularly work DX stations across Europe, South America, Asia, and the Pacific. Chasing rare DX and building out a log of unique contacts is one of our favorite parts of operating.

03
Field Operations

We take the radios outside and operate portable from locations around campus. Setting up antennas in the field and making DX contacts outdoors is one of the best ways to learn hands-on operating.

04
Digital Modes

We experiment with FT8 and other digital modes, making contacts with just a few watts and a simple antenna. A great entry point for new operators.
